1/4 funny car drive options

Post by mad62 »

hi guys,
I was wondering if i could get some info on what is the best option for drive line in my 1/4 funny car project ive just started,i will be running a petrol 26cc engine,5.2 - 7.5 hp,
I see there are several options out there, chain drive, belt drive and scale diffs,
what setup is giving the best performance speed wise ,etc and i see some guys are running rubber tyres and some foam, whats better?
heres a pic of the plug for my funnycar body,
I will start a thread in the project section once i have a bit more to show,

cheers mike :D

wow, that body plug looks pretty hot! Looks fast just sitting there. Do you have previous experience doing this?

Awesome job on that pattern...looks like one of Force's Mustangs!!! Wait 'til Paul Songas sees this!!!!

Chain... not used that much anymore due to the weight, but it doesn't slip at all! I only know one guy actively using chain right now ( but torque-wise, he's on another planet, LOL!)

Belt... the lightest and easiest to set up system. I use it. Very forgiving, easy to set up, and vibration isolating.

Gear rear end... cool, looks scale, but the individual components are quite a bit more expensive and critical to mount and set up with a drive shaft.

I prefer foam due to the fact I run with a lot of the tenth-scale guys, who all use foamies and Koford traction compound MADE for foam. Go kart tires look pretty good, don't wear much, but most are substantially heavier than foam.... more rotating mass, slower acceleration, harder on brakes.

Keep us posted on your progress!

Thanks for the comment, ive looked at johns rims,as you say there are great, unfortunatly due to our low dollar,a full set of rims and tyres would cost me round $600.00 nz dollars + freight and duty if any?.
