Raco Super Modified II Fuel?

My new Raco Super Modified II has a strange smell to it and I figured it out tonight. I think it’s the smell of alcohol fuel. 
The fuel tank and the chamber don’t smell like gas. Were these cars run on alcohol? If so what changes were made to them?
I’ll contact the guy at the hobby store and try and get some information about the last owner. This may be a very cool car
